Katherine O’Brien is typically found with a cheery disposition and a smile
on her face. She has always faced problems head on with the attitude that
while her response is important; God will ensure that she is taken care of.
At one point when her husband Jim lost his job, he came home early and
informed her of the dilemma. She was busy making an apple pie for dinner
and her immediate response was, “Why don’t you peel some apples.” This
worked at distracting him and allowed time for them to be together. A
win-win if there ever was one.
She grew up in Pennsylvania and Jim’s job as a glass plant manager moved
them to Fort Smith, Arkansas by way of Tiffin, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois.
During her time in Fort Smith Katherine has been involved in many
organizations from the YWCA as a director to helping with Habitat for
Humanity. She was a significant force with Project Compassion and her
church, Central Presbyterian Church where she served on the session numerous
times.
After retiring in the late 70’s, they purchased a motor home and toured the
country. Their grandchildren would always wait breathlessly for the O’Brien
grandparents to roll into town. They always had some new adventure, like
making Christmas Angels with cloth, starch and gold paint or bringing large
tins of cookies to decorate. And, they were just plain fun!!
Thank you for taking a few minutes to look at Katherine’s family and to
learn a little more about her.
(Written by her grandson, Jim)
